A Study of God’s Unchanging Nature

Our world seemly changes around us every day. New ideas, new laws, new lifestyles, new beliefs. As believers we are bombarded with new things constantly, but not all of them align with God’s word. What does God have to say about it? Does He change with the times? Let’s explore to find out.

Heavenly Father, I ask for Your wisdom and for Your understanding as I study Your word. Speak to my heart and soul, so that I may know You better. In Jesus' holy name I pray. Amen

God’s Promises

God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit the promised land. He also promised that the Messiah (Jesus) would come from the family line of king David. Throughout the Bible we see that the Jews, God’s chosen people, were disobedient to God numerous times. He could’ve said nevermind on His promises but God can’t break promises, He is perfect. In Malachi we see God stating that He does not change and therefore would not destroy the Jewish people. Their destruction would’ve been the just punishment for their disobedience. But by not doing so, it meant God would keep the promises He made.

Who Can Keep Promises? God Can

As fallen and sinful humans we can’t truly keep promises. Sure maybe small things from time to time, but we more often than not make promises we can’t keep. God is different in that He cannot lie, therefore He cannot make a promise and then not keep it. This is extremely important, not just to the Jews who are promised the land of Israel, but to all who put their trust in Jesus Christ.

The Importance of God Never Changing

So why is God’s unchanging nature so important to us? Psalms 33:11 says that the Lord’s counsel stands forever and the plans of His heart from generation to generation. Meaning that the same commandments and eternal plan apply to all people throughout all time. If God was flexible to the times, then how would we know good from evil? How would we know what the signs of change are in someone who is a true believer? We wouldn’t. If God changed like we do, then He would be just as evil minded and untrustworthy as we are. Don’t rely on your own understanding or that of others, but rely on the Lord alone.

We Have Peace of Mind in Christ

Because God does not change, we can have peace of mind that we’ve put our faith in someone Who will keep His promises. We can see His track record by looking at the thriving Israel and in the fact that Jesus lives, the root and descendant of David. These show us that His promise of eternal life in Him is not a bluff or a pipe dream, but the real deal. More real than anything we could ever promise each other.

Rest In His Promise

Now rest in His promise and never lose hope, regardless of what you see and hear around you. If someone tries to tell you “God told me something new” or “that is okay with God”, then read His word and see if what they say lines up. Since we know that God does not change, if what people are saying and doing does not line up with what God says, then it’s those people who are wrong, not the Bible. His word is our unchanging and single source of truth.

Final Words

The Bible clearly lays out for us the fact that God never changes, that He cannot lie, and therefore keeps all His promises. It’s important to always remember that, because you will come across many situations and people in your life that will challenge that. Staying rooted in God’s word gives us the knowledge we need to deflect any attempts to misguide or lead astray. Deception is everywhere in this world, even people who profess the name of Jesus can be mistaken or even wolves in sheep’s clothing, who are purposely trying to misguide others. Therefore, always refer back to the Bible after you’ve read or heard something. Pray for those who are lost in their rebellion and sin, pray that they see the light of Christ and allow Him to fill that void in their hearts.

Heavenly Father, we are so thankful that you never change, that the God who Adam and Eve knew, who Abraham knew, who David knew, who the Apostles knew, is the same God we know. Give us strength to endure the times, with love and in obedience to you. We love you and thank you. In Jesus’ holy name we pray. Amen
