Your Identity In Christ

Day 1

27So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female.
GENESIS 1:27 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re Created In God’s Image

This is a verse that applies to the believer and unbeliever. Telling us the very fact that all humans have been made in the likeness of God, meaning He made us morally like Him, with spirit, and able to commune with Him. To be what He made us to be, no Darwinian evolution process is needed to get us to this likeness; in fact, we’ve actually fallen from that perfect original form. We’re a species which God has written His moral law upon our hearts, to know good from evil.

13We are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from gazing steadily until the end of the glory of what was being set aside,14but their minds were hardened. For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set aside only in Christ.15Yet still today, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts,16but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.18We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2 CORINTHIANS 3:13-18 (CSB)

What sets us apart from those who don’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior is that for us, in our faith, God is working our hearts to become a reflection of Him. He’s taking us and working us back into that original created state, yet even greater, to be like that of His Son, Jesus. If you and I could gaze into a “spiritual” mirror, so to speak, we’d see not ourselves as this person with a corrupt body and sin nature, but we’d see Jesus reflected back at us. For you and me, when the Father looks at us, even in our moments of disobedience, He sees His Son, in all His perfection and glory.

Just like every other human being, we’re image-bearers of our Creator, but only the born-again follower of Christ can say that he or she is being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

Soul Search

Do I live free of guilt knowing that Christ is doing a transformative work in me?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, not only did You form me in my mother’s womb, but You have seen me through my life and sent faithful servants to deliver Your Good News to me. Now that I have accepted Your gift, You are transforming me to be like Your Son, no longer do You see my sin, but Jesus’ righteousness, wrapped around me. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

29For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.30And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.
ROMANS 8:29-30 (CSB)

Commentary

You We’re Predestined By God For Salvation

God’s transformative work in your life, as a believer, is not an accident or by chance. We’re told here that God predestined those whom He has called. And this predestination isn’t just by His choice; He foreknew you. Meaning that He knew how you would react when presented with His Gospel. For those of us who accept Christ, God has established His will for us from before He laid the foundation of this earth.

4For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. 5He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
EPHESIANS 1:4-5 (CSB)
1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To those chosen, living as exiles dispersed abroad in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient and to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
1 PETER 1:1-2 (CSB)

There are some that would say God makes some people for Him and others for destruction. Yet Scripture teaches that He wants none to perish, but all to come to repentance. If so, why would He only choose some? Because the choice to love Him is given to us by His will.

9The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.
2 PETER 3:9 (CSB)

So when you think about God’s predestination and foreknowledge, understand that He predestined each one of us for salvation or condemnation, based on His foreknowledge of what we would do with the Gospel message of Christ that was given to us.

It’s no accident, my friend; the places you’ve been, the places you will go in life, have all been architected by God, knowing exactly what you would do before you were even born.

23A person’s steps are established by the LORD, and he takes pleasure in his way.
PSALMS 37:23 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I understanding that God gives each and every person a choice, that no one goes to Hell because God made them for Hell, but because they rejected Him?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me with free will and presenting me this wonderful gift of eternal life, which You don’t force upon anyone, but offer out of pure love to all. Thank You that I am one who has accepted this gift, and I pray that many others around me will do so as well. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re A New Creation In Christ

As a born-again believer, God does not leave you the way you were when you came to Him. Instead, you and I are made into new creations, that reflection of Christ that we talked about previously.

6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin,
ROMANS 6:6 (CSB)

You were once a slave to whatever enslaved you: sex, addiction, greed, pride, whatever it was, you could not escape its chains. But now, those chains are broken. Sure, you can turn back to that stuff in some capacity if you wanted, but if you’re in Christ, there is no bondage to those things any longer, and there should be a growing desire to avoid such things.

20I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
GALATIANS 2:20 (CSB)

For me now, it’s not Chris who is living, nor is it you who is living, but Christ working in and through us to shine His light into this dark world. It’s a reminder that we should be a people who groan little and complain not, because even in the most difficult of situations, we have our God and Savior indwelling us by His Spirit, empowering you and me to be faithful witnesses to His glory. He is forging us day-by-day into His image, and one day we will be perfected, body, soul, and spirit.

Soul Search

Since coming to Jesus, do I see the newness in my life?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I know that You will complete the work You are doing in me, and I ask that You move me out of the way when I am hindering that process. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
EPHESIANS 1:7 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re Redeemed

The most important aspects of your faith in Jesus are that you are now redeemed. No longer are you running on that broad road to the wide door, which leads to Hell; now you’re on the difficult road, to the narrow gate, that few will find (Matthew 7:13-14). But you have that narrow gate in focus, moving toward it each day because of Jesus!

1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, 2because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
ROMANS 8:1-2 (CSB)

You and I can walk with our heads held high, no longer in shame or bearing the weight of our sins. Because Jesus has paid the price for all of that and in your faith has washed you clean by His shed blood. One day you’ll be so purified that the Lord will dress you in fine, bright white linen.

18“Come, let’s settle this,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool.
ISAIAH 1:18 (CSB)
12As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
PSALMS 103:12 (CSB)

Our great God has displayed his rich grace and mercy upon us, and now you and I can walk in a newness of life. No longer are you bound for destruction, but instead, now living an eternal life, which began the day you placed your trust in Jesus.

Soul Search

Have I shed the weight of my sin?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if I am struggling to forgive myself, help me to understand that You have already forgiven me and that in You I have no more shame. That You alone have taken me, stained red in my sin, and washed me white as snow. Thank You, Lord, for Your grace! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

2To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord — both their Lord and ours.
1 CORINTHIANS 1:2 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re Called A Saint By God

There are those who teach that sainthood must be acquired through a life of good works that are deemed worthy. But God’s Word tells us that all who trust in Jesus are called saints. I understand it’s hard to think of yourself in such a way. How can such a wicked and sinful person be called a saint? Because Jesus, that’s why.

2Or don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the trivial cases?3Don’t you know that we will judge angels — how much more matters of this life?
1 CORINTHIANS 6:2-3 (CSB)

Not only does God view you as a saint, He will give you and I the authority to judge with Jesus in the future, to help judge the nations and even angels. None of this comes because you were so good or so obedient to God’s will; it comes because you accepted His gift of Jesus’ shed blood, and as a result, all that Jesus is— His perfection, righteousness, and royalty— is given to you, like someone filling your bank account full.

Saint, Jesus has imputed on you what you could never attain on your own.

Soul Search

Do I find it hard to be considered a saint? Why?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, let me not make such a big deal about this term that You use for me, but to embrace the very fact that You have made me a saint, not me. Because of that, I can rejoice in what You are making me to be, a reflection of Jesus. In His wonderful name, Jesus, I pray. Amen

Day 6

22But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before him —
COLOSSIANS 1:22 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re Holy and Blameless

We saw previously that God calls us saints. This means that we should be holy and blameless; that’s what it is to be a saint. But you and I both know that we’re not currently holy or blameless. We sin daily and struggle to live holy lives. But understand that it’s not up to you; Jesus has claimed you as His own and presents you to the Father as holy and blameless, a shadow of what is to come at the end of your sanctification process.

4For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him.
EPHESIANS 1:4 (CSB)

For one day, when you’ve shed this mortal body, what awaits you is perfection of soul and spirit followed by the perfection of your body at the time of resurrection.

While we may not be saintly now, not perfected yet, God views us as such already because of the covering of Jesus’ own righteousness which He places over us.

27He did this to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.
EPHESIANS 5:27 (CSB)

Soul Search

Do I live a life that’s pleasing to God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if my lifestyle is not honoring and pleasing to You, then bring correction to my life. Remove those things which so easily stumble me off path and make me one who lives truly differently from this world, living for You. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Day 7

15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “'Abba', Father!”
ROMANS 8:15 (CSB)

Commentary

You’ve Been Adopted Into The Family of God

You’ve likely heard it said by others, people like celebrities, politicians, and even loved ones, that we’re all children of God. However, that statement is not accurate. The Bible teaches that only born-again believers are children of God. That when we come to Him, we are removed from the bondage of this sinful flesh and adopted into His Heavenly and Royal family.

Not only can we know Him as Father, but the relationship is so intimate that He is our Abba, which carries a meaning that is like “dad” or “daddy”. A word that paints the picture of a loving and tender dad who loves his children dearly.

3Acknowledge that the LORD is God. He made us, and we are his — his people, the sheep of his pasture.
PSALMS 100:3 (CSB)

We’re the sheep of our Shepherd, Christ Jesus. Who loves us so much and cares for us as a loving shepherd cares for his flock.

9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
1 PETER 2:9-10 (CSB)

We are a priesthood in Jesus, those who are made holy in Christ and set apart for God’s goodness now and in eternity. Understand that you’re truly special, not because of you, but because of Jesus. You’re a son or daughter of the Most High God.

Soul Search

Have I really gotten to know my loving Father?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I am amazed at Your love for me! How You can take this lowly life, full of sin and disappointment, and turn me into a member of Your Royal family. And not only just some distant relative, but a child of Yours whom You love so dearly. I love You too, Abba. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 8

27Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:27 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re A Working Member of the Body of Christ

Not only are we children of God for eternity. Now we’re individual members of a complete body that is Christ’s spiritual body on this earth. You and I have been gifted, not only with the talents and abilities that we already had, but new spiritual gifts of God. He equips us to do some type of ministry among our brothers and sisters in Christ along with ministering to those in the world.

12For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body — so also is Christ.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:12 (CSB)

If you know your Spiritual gift(s) and are using them for God’s glory, then keep going on as He leads to the finish line. But if you’re unsure what God has equipped you and called you to do, then please pray and seek His guidance and wisdom through the Scriptures. Start by reading 1 Corinthians chapter 12 & Romans 12:6-8.

Each and every believer has been given at least one Spiritual gift, and God wants you to use it for His glory. Regardless of where God has called you, each believer is called to minister in their lives. We all have a personal ministry for Christ, while some are also called to serve in formal positions like pastors, teachers, worship leaders, and so on.

Apart from this, ensure that you’re living a life that is pleasing to God, really doing your part to be a functioning member of this one Body in Christ.

15Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body? So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not!
1 CORINTHIANS 6:15 (CSB)

Soul Search

Do I know what God has called me to do?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if I am not sure what Your calling is on my life, please Lord, make it known to me and lead me from any confusion, fear, or anxiety to boldness for You. If I already know my calling, help me to walk in Your strength and equipping, continuing to march forward for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 9

20Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
PHILIPPIANS 3:20 (CSB)

Commentary

You’re A Citizen of Heaven

As a follower of Christ, you’ve been spiritually plucked out of this world. Now you’re a citizen of Heaven, living as an ambassador of Jesus (2 Cor. 5:20) for a relatively short period of time in this world.

27Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel,
PHILIPPIANS 1:27 (CSB)

It’s God’s will that you’re living your life worthy as a citizen of Heaven. This means you should be representing God and His Kingdom in the same way that an ambassador from one country would positively reflect his or her home country to the place where they are stationed as ambassador.

We’re very much called to be active participants in the events in this world. If you’re able to vote, you should be voting Biblically; you should be influencing your community through your Christ-centered life in ways the Lord leads you to do.

However, we’re not to be attached to this world, with a death grip on it, like Lot and his wife. Because we’re no longer from here, and what awaits us in our new and true home is much more amazing than the best this world has to offer right now. Scripture teaches that one day, this Earth will be made new, and it will be our eternal home, in a perfected state like it was when God first created it.

17“For I will create new heavens and a new earth; the past events will not be remembered or come to mind.
ISAIAH 65:17 (CSB)
13But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
2 PETER 3:13 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I living as one who no longer belongs in this world?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to always have my heart in the right place, being set on You and the eternal Home that You have promised me. Yet to also be one who is actively and positively reflecting Your glory, love, grace, mercy, and kindness to this world. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 10

10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
EPHESIANS 2:10 (CSB)

Commentary

You Were Made For Good Works

You obviously know by now that once you come to faith, God does not just take you home to Him; He leaves you here for a time. That time is for good works. These are not good works to earn salvation, which you have been given by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8). Instead, these are the works that God has ordained for you to do to glorify Him and spread the Good News of Jesus to those around you. By these things, Jesus said we’d know each other.

16You’ll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles?17In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit.18A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit.19Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.20So you’ll recognize them by their fruit.
MATTHEW 7:16-20 (CSB)

As we’ve seen, in Christ you are a redeemed child of God, whose citizenship is in Heaven, considered a priest and saint who is holy and blameless, a working member of a bigger body, which is here on this earth to plant, water, and harvest for God’s Kingdom. To live as a reflection of your Savior every day, in all that you do.

The unbelievers of this world seek their “identity” in wealth, material things, positions, and lifestyles; things which are passing away. And to them, one’s identity in Christ Jesus looks to be nothing at all, but in reality it is everything!

Soul Search

Am I understanding my identity in Christ Jesus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You so very much for making me something when I am nothing on my own. In You, my identity lies: a sheep of my Precious Lord and a child of my Wonderful Father. Someone who owes everything to You, the One who gave His life for me and is transforming me for a day to come when I will live with You in a perfected eternity. You are truly awesome, my great God and Savior! In Your precious and wonderful name, I pray. Amen
