When Affliction Hits

Day 1

8We don’t want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of our affliction that took place in Asia. We were completely overwhelmed — beyond our strength — so that we even despaired of life itself.9Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.
2 CORINTHIANS 1:8-9 (CSB)

Commentary

In this life, afflictions are a reality; no one escapes going through sickness, disease, hardship, adversity, etc. While the Lord is with us through them all, there is no guaranteed removal of all the things that may afflict us over the course of our lives. Jesus taught that God causes the rain to fall on both the righteous and the unrighteous (Matthew 5:45B). Living in a fallen world means that believers and unbelievers alike will suffer afflictions in their lifetimes.

But why does God allow His children to suffer many of the same afflictions that those who hate Him suffer? Verse 9 above has the answer, so that we will place greater trust in the Lord and move completely away from trusting in ourselves and the things of this world. Affliction hits because God allows such things in order to forge you like steel in a fiery furnace. To prepare you for that day when you will enter into eternity with Him and hopefully hear these words, “well done, good and faithful servant”.

Soul Search

How has affliction in my life brought me closer to Jesus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are always so good! Today, even as I may struggle, I will look to You for all that I need. Whether it be healing, strength, endurance, peace, or whatever, I know that in You I have all that I need, even if Your plans for my life turn out different than what I am expecting. I love You so much because You have first loved me! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Day 2

16Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.17For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.18So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-18 (CSB)

Commentary

When affliction hits, it can hit hard, so hard that you might be tempted to give up, to throw in the towel, and succumb. It’s the nature of our flesh to become bitter, cynical, and faithless, but God doesn’t want you to be a resentful quitter. Instead, the Holy Spirit that lives inside of you will drive you to press forward, to focus on the unseen; the hope that you have in Jesus; the glory that awaits you in eternity — if you set aside your flesh and allow His Spirit to work in you.

Oh, how it can be so difficult to suffer in our mortal bodies; pain, disease, fear, depression, and anxiety can all be used as crowbars in order to pry us away from the peace that we have in our Lord Jesus. But whenever you feel like giving in, turn your focus to Jesus and ask Him for the strength to carry you through. He will carry you through one way or the other, either in a victory for His glory, to keep you pressing forward on your mission as His salt and light to others, or He will deliver you from this world into His waiting arms, into the place that He called Paradise.

43And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
LUKE 23:43 (CSB)

Soul Search

In my affliction, have I been turning to God’s Word for peace and hope?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please help me to remove myself or other things as the sole “solution” to my affliction and to place You into that position as the Solution to my affliction. May I listen to You and guard my mind and my heart, also taking care of this body You’ve given me, as a temple of Your Spirit; so that I may be a great witness for You, especially during the hardest times of my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Day 3

3And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance,4endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.5This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
ROMANS 5:3-5 (CSB)

Commentary

The faith that you and I have in Jesus takes us into the grace of God, and through Him, we too can exhibit a grace that surpasses all understanding in our times of affliction. The same affliction that drives someone to utter cynicism, drug abuse, or alcohol can be one that drives you closer to the Lord, and as a result, your relationship with Him will grow to new levels.

Though the affairs of this world can be extremely harsh to bear, we have God’s never-ending love to see us through. When an unbeliever sees the joy that you still have, even though you are in physical or emotional pain, you become a bright shining light of Christ to them. The glory you bring to God by allowing Him to work through you, even in the toughest of times, is immeasurable and will help to build a case for Christ in the hearts and minds of those who are currently seeking the truth. I don’t know about you, but I want Christ to radiate from me no matter what my situation is — whether I’m enjoying a season of blessing or enduring a season of trying affliction, may God be glorified in all that I do.

Soul Search

During times of affliction, am I displaying the undying joy that God has placed in my inner being?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, through You may I be able to rejoice in any affliction that I am currently facing or will face, so that in my rejoicing I may become a brighter light of the Gospel of Your Grace. My life is Yours, and may Your will be done in it. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Day 4

35Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?36As it is written: Because of you we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,39nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
ROMANS 8:35-39 (CSB)

Commentary

When the moment is darkest, it will be natural to seek comfort in people, things, medical advice, other people’s experiences, and the like, but God and His Word are the only place to find true lasting comfort and strength that will help you to endure. Know that whatever you may be facing today, Jesus is with you. As the apostle Paul states above, there is nothing created that can ever separate us from the love of Christ. Even if you are struggling with great affliction right now, your comfort and strength can be found in the love that He has for you and in His written Word. Let His words comfort you in all your days and take note of how the Lord has comforted you in your afflictions, so that you may share that comfort with others who need it also.

It is written:

4He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
2 CORINTHIANS 1:4 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I seeking comfort in God’s undying love for me?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to get my mind off of my situation and focused back on You. May my light for You never grow dim in the darkest of hours nor in the brightest of days. I want to be an example of Jesus to everyone around me, to honor You and to glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Day 5

4You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
1 JOHN 4:4 (CSB)

Commentary

We can be tempted to believe that our afflictions and suffering are from God, that maybe we didn’t have enough faith, but those are lies of demons. Our afflictions come from the fallen state that we and this world are in, which is under the sway of the evil one and his demons. We can be afflicted by things out of our control and also by things of our own doing, like the consequences of bad decisions, sowing to our flesh and poor health habits.

Though God allows such affliction and suffering, there is always a purpose behind Him allowing it. We know forging our faith is one purpose, but He may never reveal the full purpose to us. We must understand that if we knew the mind of God and what His plans were for each of us, then we would certainly ask God to answer our prayers just as He does, rather than what we originally asked for.

My brother or sister, we are more than conquerors in Christ! Our Lord Jesus told us that there would be suffering in this world, but to be of courage because He has overcome this world!

33I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
JOHN 16:33 (CSB)
Every day and in all things, rejoice in the Lord, for He is your Rock and your Redeemer, the Author and Finisher of your faith; in Him you are a conqueror and He has predestined a day for you when you will overcome this world — all you must do is endure and keep the faith. God will sustain you until you shed this mortal body and join Him in eternity, so live now for Him in all that you do and through all that you endure.

Soul Search

Am I resting every day from fear and worry, knowing that in good times and bad, Jesus is with me until the end?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, words cannot fully express the joy that I have in You, my Savior. Oh Lord, the days can be so hard, and I struggle so much at times. I need You more than I could ever know. Thank You for Your love, which sustains me, and the faith that assures me that my eternity will be infinitely greater than this life right now, that my best life is yet to come, with You in Heaven. Help me to keep pressing forward for You, with my eyes on the prize. In Your mighty and precious name, I pray. Amen.
