Walk In Obedience, For Satan Is A Relentless Foe

Day 1

5for indeed, you will conceive and give birth to a son. You must never cut his hair, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from birth, and he will begin to save Israel from the power of the Philistines.”
JUDGES 13:5 (CSB)

Commentary

During this time, God delivered Israel over to the Philistines for 40 years because of their evil. When God saw fit to judge the Philistines for their own evil, He blessed Samson’s parents with his conception. He would become a judge for Israel for twenty years.

24So the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the LORD blessed him.
JUDGES 13:24 (CSB)

Samson was set aside by God and was a Nazirite, which was someone in those days who was dedicated to serving the Lord. They avoided things like drinking wine or beer, consuming any part of the grape, eating unclean food, cutting one’s hair, and so on. You can learn about the Nazirite vow in Numbers 6:2-21.

Samson was a Holy Spirit-filled man, whom God used mightily to judge the Philistines, but as we’ll see, Samson lived a mostly morally compromised life, seeking to satisfy his flesh quite often. Though God would use Samson’s poor choices to still complete His judgment, Samson’s continued life of compromise would ultimately lead to his own life being taken.

As a born-again believer in Jesus, do I understand that I am set aside for God to do His will?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, guide me in Your ways, give me patience to wait on Your direction, to focus my heart and mind on Your will. Help me to walk the straight and narrow path that You have laid out for me, not turning to the left or the right. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

1Samson went down to Timnah and saw a young Philistine woman there.2He went back and told his father and his mother, “I have seen a young Philistine woman in Timnah. Now get her for me as a wife.”3But his father and mother said to him, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines for a wife?” But Samson told his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.”4Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who wanted the Philistines to provide an opportunity for a confrontation. At that time, the Philistines were ruling Israel.
JUDGES 14:1-4 (CSB)

Commentary

Samson, like many men, was easily snared by the beauty of a woman. He “fell in love” quickly with a wayward woman that he should not have pursued. God had commanded the people of Israel not to intermarry with the pagan Gentile nations around them because He knew that it would lead to sin and idolatry. (Deuteronomy 7:3-4)

God’s purpose was for Samson to bring His judgment upon the Philistines. So God allowed this situation, which gave Samson an opportunity to confront God’s enemies. There was surely a better way for Samson to have walked in obedience, and God would’ve still accomplished His will, though God will still use our disobedient actions to accomplish His will if needed. But that isn’t how God wants it, and the consequences of walking in your own flesh too often will eventually come back to bite you.

17She wept the whole seven days of the feast, and at last, on the seventh day, he explained it to her, because she had nagged him so much. Then she explained it to her people.18On the seventh day, before sunset, the men of the city said to him: What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion? So he said to them: If you hadn’t plowed with my young cow, you wouldn’t know my riddle now!19The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men. He stripped them and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. In a rage, Samson returned to his father’s house,20and his wife was given to one of the men who had accompanied him.
JUDGES 14:17-20 (CSB)

Samson did things that a Nazirite should not have done. In this case, he ate honey from a bee hive that was in the carcass of a lion that he had torn apart previously. He then made a riddle of it, thinking he would trap the Philistines into giving him 30 changes of fine clothing. Samson was very much focused on his own desires, but outwardly still maintained a good appearance of a Nazirite, though he had already broken his vows.

Though Samson’s intentions were not focused on God first, God still used the situation to kill more Philistines. Samson did end up losing his Philistine wife to a man in his wedding party, a wife he should not ever have taken in the first place.

When we seek to gain in the world, against God’s will for us, then there should be no expectation that we’ll keep what we acquired through disobedience. God may allow the consequences of our disobedience to play out, or He might take direct action. In this case, I think God likely allowed the consequences to play out, the result of dealing with wicked people.

How have I strayed at times from God’s ways?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please forgive me if I am currently straying from the path You have set for me, trying to follow my own desires instead of Yours. Help me to regain focus on Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

1Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute and went to bed with her.2When the Gazites heard that Samson was there, they surrounded the place and waited in ambush for him all that night at the city gate. They kept quiet all night, saying, “Let’s wait until dawn; then we will kill him.”3But Samson stayed in bed only until midnight. Then he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate along with the two gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. He put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking Hebron.4Some time later, he fell in love with a woman named Delilah, who lived in the Sorek Valley.5The Philistine leaders went to her and said, “Persuade him to tell you where his great strength comes from, so we can overpower him, tie him up, and make him helpless. Each of us will then give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
JUDGES 16:1-5 (CSB)

Commentary

Here again, Samson followed his flesh instead of being obedient to God. As a Nazirite, he knew that he was not to be doing such things. He walked too often in the weakness of his own flesh rather than the power of God. In this bad situation, the Lord rescued Samson from his enemies, but not for Samson’s sake, instead for His own will. God still had work for Samson to do.

After God rescued Samson, he again succumbed to his desire for wayward women. He once again unequally yoked himself to an unbeliever. Surely Satan made sure that these women were around to exploit Samson’s weakness, because it seemed very easy to exploit. By his carnal living, Samson made himself an easy target for stumbling and unnecessary suffering. Though everything seemed good for Samson, the day of reckoning would come.

14Do not be yoked together with those who do not believe. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?
2 CORINTHIANS 6:14 (CSB)

Don’t be deceived. If you’re living a compromised life like Samson did, it may seem as if all is good, but I can tell you it is not. God might still be using you for His will, but it would be far better to walk in His ways. In doing so, you’ll receive His blessings over your life, but in unrepentant disobedience, you will open yourself up for many unnecessary sufferings and eventually your own destruction.

Soul Search

What moral compromise(s) do I have in my life? Am I seeking the Lord for help, to shore up my walk with Him, or do I leave the door cracked open for temptation to come sneaking in?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I need your strength to help me to close up the doors and windows to my heart and mind. I want them sealed tight so that temptation and sin have very little ease of entry into my life. But when temptation does show up, may I be so Heavenly-minded that I am able to have victory with the strength You have given me. In Your mighty name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

16Because she nagged him day after day and pleaded with him until she wore him out, 17he told her the whole truth and said to her, “My hair has never been cut, because I am a Nazirite to God from birth. If I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become weak and be like any other man.”
JUDGES 16:16-17 (CSB)

Commentary

Samson must’ve been a visually unimpressive man, because nobody seemed to know where his mighty strength came from. He was probably an average-looking man, but God had given him supernatural strength in order to fulfill His will.

Samson’s latest unbeliever wife, Delilah, was very greedy and self-serving; she had no real love for Samson. A situation that any believer could find themselves in when they don’t seek to yoke themselves to a partner who also loves the Lord.

She nagged Samson daily to tell her where his strength came from, so that the Philistines could overpower him, take him captive, and she could get paid. This is a prime example of Satan’s relentless grinding. He will continue and continue and continue to chip away at you until you give in, as finally Samson did, after previously lying to Delilah about the source of his strength.

18When Delilah realized that he had told her the whole truth, she sent this message to the Philistine leaders: “Come one more time, for he has told me the whole truth.” The Philistine leaders came to her and brought the silver with them.19Then she let him fall asleep on her lap and called a man to shave off the seven braids on his head. In this way, she made him helpless, and his strength left him.20Then she cried, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” When he awoke from his sleep, he said, “I will escape as I did before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had left him.21The Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes. They brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles, and he was forced to grind grain in the prison.22But his hair began to grow back after it had been shaved.
JUDGES 16:18-22 (CSB)
It wasn’t Samson’s hair that was truly the source of his strength, but his anointing from God. Samson had lived in compromise far too long, and God’s patience finally ran out. After years of Samson pursuing the desires of his flesh and thinking all was good, God had nearly completed His will for Samson, as the one who would destroy the Philistines, and would allow him to be turned over to his own destruction. If Samson would’ve only repented and kept on the path with God, then surely God would’ve accomplished this destruction of the Philistines in a manner that would’ve blessed Samson’s life.

Do I have any times in my life where God allowed me to suffer the consequences of my disobedience? How did that change my walk with Him?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if I have not yet suffered consequences for any disobedience to You, then may I learn the lesson from this account of Samson, repent, and turn back to You. Your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

23Now the Philistine leaders gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon. They rejoiced and said: Our god has handed over our enemy Samson to us.24When the people saw him, they praised their god and said: Our god has handed over to us our enemy who destroyed our land and who multiplied our dead.25When they were in good spirits, they said, “Bring Samson here to entertain us.” So they brought Samson from prison, and he entertained them. They had him stand between the pillars.26Samson said to the young man who was leading him by the hand, “Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple, so I can lean against them.”27The temple was full of men and women; all the leaders of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching Samson entertain them.28He called out to the LORD, “Lord GOD, please remember me. Strengthen me, God, just once more. With one act of vengeance, let me pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”29Samson took hold of the two middle pillars supporting the temple and leaned against them, one on his right hand and the other on his left.30Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” He pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the leaders and all the people in it. And those he killed at his death were more than those he had killed in his life.31Then his brothers and his father’s whole family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah. So he judged Israel twenty years.
JUDGES 16:23-31 (CSB)

Commentary

The time had come. Samson suffered greatly for his constant disobedience. Make no mistake, he was a saved man. The Book of Hebrews lists him as a hero of the faith. But he lived a carnal life that the enemy was able to use against him over and over again. It’s fitting that a man who struggled with lust had his eyes gouged out. God’s hand of protection for Samson had been removed. God allowed him to succumb to his enemies as a consequence of his compromised lifestyle.

Samson’s captivity quite possibly could’ve been avoided if he had just lived for the Lord more than for himself. Yet God still used these situations to complete His judgment on the Philistines and deliver Israel from their rule.

Samson would end up killing the leaders and more Philistines than he had killed all those years prior, but because he was disobedient to the Lord so often, this would come at the expense of his own life.

Understand that God is more patient with us than we can even comprehend. He will wait weeks, months, years even, to give us time to turn back in obedience to Him. You can be a born-again believer in Christ Jesus, but fail to live up to the witness that God would have you be. These are those who Jesus said would just barely make it into Heaven.

You don’t want to be that kind of Christian, because it’s a slippery slope for one. There is a fine line between saved, but compromised, and unsaved. Two, you will miss out on blessings that God had saved up for you. If you’re focused on your own desires and unrepentant in your pursuit of personal pleasure, then know that destruction will surely come. God loves you too much to leave you here, hurting yourself over and over, and recklessly representing Him.

I encourage you to spend time reading the full account of Samson in the Book of Judges, chapters 13-16. Take the time to also evaluate your life. If you’re living like Samson, turn to Jesus and ask His forgiveness and get back to living for Him first.

Do I have other believers in my life who can help me discover the blind spots in my walk, and do I do the same for them?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, lead me to those brothers or sisters who will lovingly rebuke me and help me to see the blind spots that I have, which lead me astray at times. May I also be that loving sibling-in-Christ who helps them see their blind spots. I want to live my life in a way that pleases You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
