Reaching Toward Jesus

Day 1

10My goal is to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death,11assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.
PHILIPPIANS 3:10-11 (CSB)

Commentary

For the believer, it’s all about Jesus. This is what Paul is communicating here. Paul’s goal was to know Jesus, not by His historical details or His attributes, but to really know Him in a spiritually intimate way.

For you and me, this is the living of our lives in Christ’s power, in the transformative state that He has placed us in. This is a life mirroring Jesus, one that is full of utter dependency on Him and not of displays of religion or self-driven works.

Paul wanted to have fellowship with Jesus in suffering and be conformed to His death. That’s the walk of a born-again believer in Jesus, a commitment to Him with a strong fellowship that enables the acceptance of death for that faith. Death to our flesh and death to the ways of this world.

You and I are not strangers to suffering; the life of the believer is full of it. Whether it be your daily struggle with sin, your mistreatment by others, or unimaginable persecution — we make it through because of Him who carries us by His might. Our goal should be that of Paul’s, to know Jesus as intimately as we possibly can.

7Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.8We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair;9we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed.10We always carry the death of Jesus in our body, so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed in our body.11For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’s sake, so that Jesus’s life may also be displayed in our mortal flesh.
2 CORINTHIANS 4:7-11 (CSB)

Soul Search

How’s my relationship with Jesus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, it’s in You that the light of men, true life, is found. Though I may face difficult times or even death, it’s in You that I have the light of hope. I don’t want to just go around naming Your name; I want to know You so well that I can feel Your presence in my life in every single situation. That my life is a full-on reflection of You. In Your precious name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

12Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead,
PHILIPPIANS 3:12-13 (CSB)

Commentary

Don’t think for a moment that you or any other believer has attained this goal in totality. It’s impossible for us in our current fallen state. But as Paul states, he made every effort to do so, because it’s Christ Jesus who had taken hold of him. It’s the same for you and me; we’re chosen, picked out of the crowd specifically by our Lord. So we aim to walk with Him, to truly know Him because even though He knows us, He still loves us so.

The key to achieving even what we can of such a lofty goal is to always be looking forward to Him. You cannot let your past steal away your focus. Maybe it’s the memories of sins you once loved or how much easier your life seemed before coming to Jesus. Those are all thoughts that will turn your attention away from Jesus and rob you of a precious walk with Him.

62But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
LUKE 9:62 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I taking my thought life captive in Jesus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please fill me afresh with Your Spirit, that I can have victory over my thoughts and the sins which so easily ensnare me. Let my eyes, my ears, and most importantly my heart be focused on You each and every day. Looking ahead and walking in Your calling. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

14I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.15Therefore, let all of us who are mature think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will reveal this also to you.16In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we have attained.17Join in imitating me, brothers and sisters, and pay careful attention to those who live according to the example you have in us.
PHILIPPIANS 3:14-17 (CSB)

Commentary

The prize is your calling by God, that you’re bound for Heaven. The very fact that He called you to Him is the most precious thing anyone could receive. It’s not your gifting, your position, your status, but the very fact that you belong to Jesus. He loves you so much that He called you out of your sin to Him. There is nothing better, my friend.

You might be a new believer or not as mature as you should be, but Paul states that we’re to live up to whatever level of truth we have. Whatever you have studied in God’s Word and what you learn from mature believers in your life should be practiced by you. As you draw nearer and nearer to the Lord, He will show you more of His heart. You will mature in your faith, and the desires of your heart will become more and more what He desires.

21At that time he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.
LUKE 10:21 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I living out what I know of God’s Word?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, speak to me through Your Word as You see fit. Keep me heavenly-minded as I set out today to live for You. Thank You, Father, for the transformative work You are doing in me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

18For I have often told you, and now say again with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.19Their end is destruction; their god is their stomach; their glory is in their shame; and they are focused on earthly things.
PHILIPPIANS 3:18-19 (CSB)

Commentary

We’re living in a time of so much “Cultural Christianity”, where so-called Christians are living their lives full of indulgence and pride. There are even those who use the label “Christian” when it seems beneficial to them for whatever gain they are seeking. They claim to follow Jesus, but who they follow, I’m not sure. It’s likely not the Jesus of the Bible. And this is a heartbreaking thing.

14“For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
MATTHEW 22:14 (CSB)

There is a destructive focus on this world and the things of it, on one’s desires and not on Jesus. Too much reaching for one’s dreams and not enough reaching toward Jesus. It’s a product of the man-pleasing culture that we live in. This also hinders born-again believers, keeping us distracted from following our Lord as we should be. These enemies of the cross, as Paul calls them, Satan uses to stumble those of us who do truly know Jesus. He will get those who walk and talk like real Christians to veer you off course, to rattle your confidence, and to shake your faith.

43For they loved human praise more than praise from God.
JOHN 12:43 (CSB)

Listen, if your heart is truly focused on Jesus, you will be doing what He wants you to do. You won’t need to seek people’s approval or search out opportunities. He’ll lead the way. You don’t need to follow your dreams; just follow Jesus.

Soul Search

Have I established my own mission rather than following the Lord?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, whatever I am doing, please reveal to me if it’s what You want me to be focused on. If not, remove it from me and set me on the correct path. I don’t want to be busy for the sake of feeling good about what I’m doing, but instead looking to You every moment for my marching orders. To be planting, watering, and harvesting souls for You as You lead me. In Your mighty name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

20Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.21He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself.
PHILIPPIANS 3:20-21 (CSB)

Commentary

As a true disciple of Christ, you are not worldly, but heavenly focused. As you and I continue to walk in step with Jesus, our hearts and minds will become even more heavenly focused. This place is not our home; we’re just passing through. While we should be occupying ourselves, we’re not to be transfixed on what is going on here. World events should not paralyze us with fear.

Shine the light of Jesus in all aspects of your life, work, home, voting, in every activity you do, each and every day. But don’t be so occupied with the happenings going on around you that you lose that closeness with Jesus, losing sight of His leading.

He is our lifeline; His blood washed us clean from our sins and gives us true life — eternal life.

The days remaining to be witnesses for Jesus may be coming to a close sooner rather than later. It’s time to ensure that you are committed to getting to know Your Savior more and more each day. In doing so, watch your life transform. God will use you as a witness for Him in ways you would’ve never considered before, as you reach for Him more and more.

Soul Search

Am I reaching for Jesus everyday, to know Him and reflect Him?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I want to be radical for You, to be so tethered to You that everyone who crosses my path says to themselves “this person is different”. That even though they might not know why at first, they can see something so good in me that they want it. Not my own goodness, which is nothing, but Your goodness, which is everything. Use me as You see fit. When You have a mission, may I be like Isaiah, with an attitude of, “here I am Lord, send me”. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
