The Trinity & Crowning of King Jesus

Day 1

1Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?2The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his Anointed One: 3“Let’s tear off their chains and throw their ropes off of us.”
PSALMS 2:1-3 (CSB)

Commentary

Written roughly one-thousand years before Jesus, psalm 2 describes His crowning as King. Not only that, but this psalm reveals the entire Trinity of God. Verses 1 and 2 are the narration of the Holy Spirit, working through King David as the scribe. Your English Bible likely uses the word LORD in verse 2; this is in place of the original Hebrew יְהוָֹה (YHWH in English letters), which is the unpronounceable name of God, in reference to God the Father.

This passage describes mankind’s vain attempts through history to completely escape God, which is impossible. Since the fall, mankind has done everything imaginable to rebel against our Creator and attempt to live how we please.

Verse 3 shows us just how depraved we really are. Rather than embrace the loving boundaries that God has set for us, with His moral standards, mankind instead has viewed it as a burden, chains to be removed. The reality is, it’s the sin in our lives that truly binds us in chains, and Jesus is who breaks those chains away when we repent and place our faith in Him.

Can I see just how much the nations are raging against God at this time?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word is so deep, and You always reveal new things as I read and study over time. You’re truly amazing! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

4The one enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord ridicules them.5Then he speaks to them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath:6“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
PSALMS 2:4-6 (CSB)

Commentary

Here in verse 4, the Holy Spirit gives reference to Jesus. You’ll notice the word used here is Lord and not LORD (YHWH). God the Father and God the Son sit in Heaven laughing at mankind’s vain attempts to rebel. God is not worried or caught off guard. Though He is patient, there come times when His patience runs out and His wrath hits.

Verse 6 is God the Father telling mankind that He has set His King (Jesus) on Zion, which is a mountain in Israel. The very mountain that Jesus will return to at the end of the Tribulation (Revelation 14) and establish His Millennial Kingdom on Earth.

Here we have an Old Testament Scripture that is clearly revealing the Trinity of God to the world. Only someone with pride and deceptive ambitions could honestly look at this psalm and say that the Trinity is just a Christian heresy.

The Bible is all about Jesus (Hebrews 10:7), do I see that?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You’ve existed forever, our Creator and Redeemer. Give me the eyes to see You all throughout the Old Testament. And just like the apostles, be able to clearly share with others all the places that speak of You. In Your awesome name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

7I will declare the LORD’s decree. He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the earth your possession.9You will break them with an iron scepter; you will shatter them like pottery.”
PSALMS 2:7-9 (CSB)

Commentary

This set of verses is Jesus speaking, declaring what God the Father has bestowed upon Him. This is the coronation of Jesus as King over all creation. Again, this was written one thousand years before Jesus came to Earth. God always reveals His plans ahead of time, and all throughout Old Testament Scripture are prophecies of Jesus.

Verse 9 confirms Jesus’ authority over the nations and is also repeated in Revelation, in the form of a promise of sharing His authority with those of us who endure in faith until the end. The prophetic nature of passages like Psalm 2 gives us great confidence in the perfect accuracy of the Bible and that it is indeed God’s Word.

25Only hold on to what you have until I come.26The one who conquers and who keeps my works to the end: I will give him authority over the nations —27and he will rule them with an iron scepter; he will shatter them like pottery —28just as I have received this from my Father. I will also give him the morning star.
REVELATION 2:25-28 (CSB)

Am I amazed at how vividly some of these Old Testament passages speak of Jesus, centuries before He came to this earth?

Prayer

Lord God, only You know the beginning from the end. Anyone else who says that they do is a liar and deceiver. Guide me in my study of Your Word, that I may gain a sound and thorough understanding of just how precious and unmatched Your Word is. Thank You for giving us signs like these, that show us who You are. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

10So now, kings, be wise; receive instruction, you judges of the earth.11Serve the LORD with reverential awe and rejoice with trembling.
PSALMS 2:10-11 (CSB)

Commentary

Again, we’re back to the voice of the Holy Spirit, who is exhorting mankind to follow the ways of God. For leaders to draw from the guidance of God the Father and rule with a godly and righteous zeal.

At that time, the believer was saved by grace, through faith, just like today. Jesus was there all around them, interacting with them as He led the Jews out of Egypt. He talked with and blessed Abraham in a pre-incarnate form, a man called Melchizedek. They also had hints like this psalm, which foretold of a coming Messiah, but they didn’t yet know His name. They followed the ways of the LORD (YHWH) and placed their trust in Him that He would indeed provide the Savior at a future time. You could say that those Old Testament believers looked ahead to the work of Jesus as we now look back on the work of Jesus.

Do I understand that Jesus has always existed?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Your Word tells us that You were at creation; in fact, creation was made through You. That You led Moses and the Jews out of Egypt, that You met with Abraham and blessed him, that You wrestled with Jacob. That You have personally interacted with the heroes of the faith for centuries before Your revelation to the world and now live in the hearts of all who are born again by the Holy Spirit into You. I praise Your mighty name, my great God and Savior! Amen

Day 5

12Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry and you will perish in your rebellion, for his anger may ignite at any moment. All who take refuge in him are happy.
PSALMS 2:12 (CSB)

Commentary

Holy Spirit is again speaking in this final verse, exhorting mankind to trust in the Son. We’re warned that not doing so will mean perishing in our rebellion. This verse tells mankind one thousand years before Jesus was on Earth, to trust in Him alone. The Truth that Jesus Himself would reiterate again and again during His ministry on Earth.

6Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
JOHN 14:6 (CSB)

As Creator, Jesus has the power to ignite His anger toward a person or people at any time. The message here is, repent and believe in Him before it’s too late. You might not make it another year, month, week, day, or even hour.

But all of us who seek refuge in Him, trusting in Him for salvation, will be happy. The word happy is translated from a Hebrew word that also can be translated as blessed. It’s more than a happy that we get when something good happens; this is a deep, unending joy.
