No Greater Love…

Day 1

8Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.
GENESIS 22:8 (CSB)

Commentary

Hints of The Savior

If you’re familiar with this account of God’s test of Abraham’s faith, then you know that God provided a ram in place of Isaac, sparing Isaac’s life. But ultimately, this was a symbol pointing to God’s promise to provide the Sacrifice for all mankind, Jesus the Lamb, who is able to spare all of our lives.

8Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake image and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will recover.”9So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. Whenever someone was bitten, and he looked at the bronze snake, he recovered.
NUMBERS 21:8-9 (CSB)
The full account tells us that the Israelites had grown weary and spoke out against God, so He sent poisonous snakes which killed many of them. As a measure of redemption from that, God told Moses to mount a snake on a staff, and that all who looked upon it would be spared death from their snake bites.

This was not only an event that took place but a symbol of what was to come with Jesus’ crucifixion. The snakes represent our sin and the death caused by sin, and the snake on the staff represents Jesus becoming our sin on the cross. All who look upon Jesus for salvation will receive it.

14“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,15so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
JOHN 3:14-15 (CSB)

The plan of redemption was always in place, and what God pointed Israel to ultimately pointed to Jesus.

Passages like these are extraordinary evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word and that the volume of its pages points to the Savior, Jesus.

Do the symbols that point to Jesus throughout the Old Testament bring me further assurance of who He is?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You created us knowing that we would rebel, yet in Your love You always had a redemption plan in place. For those who listened to You, they believed by faith that one day You would make good on it. And now, for those of us who look back 2,000 years ago, we see mission complete in the work of Jesus. Thank You for providing the Lamb! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

21From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
MATTHEW 16:21 (CSB)

Commentary

One Life For All Life

About 2,000 years from the time God first called Abraham and over 1,500 years from Moses lifting up the snake, God made good on His promise of providing the Lamb and lifting Him up as our sin on the cross.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
JOHN 1:29 (CSB)

The sacrifices of the Law of Moses had no real power to wash away a person’s sin. But instead, they pointed to what was coming, a time when the Lamb would purchase His own, by the shedding of His blood. The writer of Hebrews pulls from Psalm 40, these words which speak of Jesus and His mission.

5Therefore, as he was coming into the world, he said: You did not desire sacrifice and offering, but you prepared a body for me.6You did not delight in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.7Then I said, “See — it is written about me in the scroll — I have come to do your will, God.”
HEBREWS 10:5-7 (CSB)

For those of us who know Jesus, we understand that He laid down His own life in order to atone for our iniquity. That through Him we are forgiven and spared God’s wrath for our sins!

The torture that Jesus would endure was not a defeat in the throes of His earthly ministry, but a fulfillment of what was promised — complete and total victory over sin and death! He proved Himself to not only be our Creator, but the very embodiment of love.

13No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
JOHN 15:13 (CSB)

Have I been helping those around me see their sickness (their sin) and then pointing them to the Cure (Jesus)?

Heavenly Father, give me the love and courage to seek out the lost and to tell them about Jesus. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.18And they began to salute him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”19They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.20After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.
MARK 15:17-20 (CSB)

Commentary

Our Sin Transferred To Him

Jesus came to Earth during the Roman reign over Jerusalem. It was exactly the perfect time for Him to visit His creation and fulfill His mission, because He appointed that time in His perfect will. At this time, God placed all of our sin upon Jesus.

6For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly.
ROMANS 5:6 (CSB)
21He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:21 (CSB)

Old and New Testament verses tell us that Jesus was mercilessly flogged, spit on, had pieces of His beard torn out, mocked, and mistreated. The Bible’s descriptions are difficult enough to read, but when you understand the methods of torture that the Romans had employed at that time in history, you can come to understand just how brutal the treatment of Jesus was.

He was literally disfigured from His torture. The Roman whips, equipped with shards on the ends, would’ve effortlessly torn out the flesh from His back, leaving Him a mangled, bloody mess, with bone and internal tissue exposed. A treatment reserved for only the worst criminals in the Roman Empire.

6I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard. I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.
ISAIAH 50:6 (CSB)
14Just as many were appalled at you  — his appearance was so disfigured that he did not look like a man, and his form did not resemble a human being —
ISAIAH 52:14 (CSB)

This is how it had to be, because the punishment for our sin had to be adequate. A just and perfect God cannot accept anything less, or He would fail to be so. Therefore, Jesus entered into history at a time when His death would be so brutal that it would be enough to cover our sin.

Do I understand how serious my sin really is?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I deserve to be where Jesus was, but You have shown me a mercy that I cannot even fully understand. Let me never water it down or take for granted just how much it cost to redeem me. Thank You, Lord! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá sabachtháni?” that is,“ My God, my God, why have you abandoned me ?”
MATTHEW 27:46 (CSB)

Commentary

His Sacrifice For Us

What God the Father saw in this time of Jesus’ torture and death was not His Son, but all of the wickedness of mankind. Our sin, past, present, and future. In that hour, God the Father had turned His face away from Jesus and was pleased to bring His wrath for our sin upon Him.

13They open their mouths against me — lions, mauling and roaring.14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed; my heart is like wax, melting within me.15My strength is dried up like baked clay; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You put me into the dust of death.16For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet.17I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me.18They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.
PSALMS 22:13-18 (CSB)

On the cross, Jesus suffered in extreme agony, as we can determine from the study of Roman crucifixion. Seven-inch nails were driven through His wrists and feet. The pain and fatigue soon gave way to the failure of His leg muscles. Blood loss from His scourging served to only hasten His weakening. As His legs gave out, His shoulders would take on the weight, but would eventually fail as well. Soon followed by his elbow joints and wrists, resulting in His arms separating at their sockets. This would’ve elongated His arms by as much as six to seven inches, causing His upper body to slump down and forward, bearing His body weight. The weight that His chest had to bear caused His breathing to become extremely labored. Oxygen was severely restricted to His lungs, and His heart, surrounded by water, would struggle to beat fast enough, leading to His death by suffocation. However, unlike anyone else, His time of His death would only come when He dismissed His own spirit.

When you read the words, God loved the world in this way…, from John 3:16, this is it. This is exactly how much God loves you and me.

We deserve to be on that cross in His place, yet His love has spared us from that and will spare us from God’s present and eternal wrath, as believers. Your debt has been paid; the work is finished!

30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
JOHN 19:30 (CSB)

If you’re a follower of Christ, ensure that you’re living to honor God and give thanks to Jesus for His mercy and grace toward you.

Do I understand the cost of my sin?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I can’t even fully comprehend how much You suffered on that cross in my place. You endured horrific torture because You found value in me, though I am unworthy. Your Word says, “For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross”. Thank You, Lord, for Your love, so unimaginable, that You would count me as one who brings so much joy to You, that You gave Your life for mine. In Your wonderful name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

1After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.2There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.4The guards were so shaken by fear of him that they became like dead men.5The angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.6He is not here. For he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
MATTHEW 28:1-6 (CSB)

Commentary

His Victory!

The darkness of crucifixion day would make way to the light on the third day. Jesus’ torture and death would be absolutely meaningless if He were not able to overcome the grave, but He did, just as He said He would!

39He answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.40For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
MATTHEW 12:39-40 (CSB)

What was once unredeemable has become redeemable through our Savior. It’s in Christ Jesus that all our hope lies, in this life and in eternity. As the Holy Spirit, through John, writes of Jesus.

3All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.5That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
JOHN 1:3-5 (CSB)

Because death could not hold Jesus down, it cannot hold the believer in Christ down either. We now have a hope for what is to come and no longer fear. For death has no power to carry the believer into eternal condemnation, but is our graduation into the promises of eternal life. This was all made possible by our precious God and Savior, Jesus.

10He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him.11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.12But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name,13who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.
JOHN 1:10-13 (CSB)
