God Holds All Things In His Hands

Day 1

1There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven:2a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot; 3a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build;4a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance;5a time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace and a time to avoid embracing;6a time to search and a time to count as lost; a time to keep and a time to throw away;7a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to be silent and a time to speak;8a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.
ECCLESIASTES 3:1-8 (CSB)

Commentary

Even if we don’t fully understand it, we can see that our lives shift between ever-changing seasons. As Charles Spurgeon put it: “Ours is a checkered life. We are not long for any one state, and we quickly change from one condition to another—which is sometimes better, but sometimes worse”.

The author of Ecclesiastes (Solomon), noted that every occasion or season has its counterpart, the good and the bad. Experience shows us just how quickly our lives can shift from one season to another, it can be mere seconds that the shift takes place, maybe we don’t even know it yet.

How we love when life shifts into a good season, yet it’s inescapable that we will deal with seasons of grief, mourning, loss, intense labor, and so on. For in this fallen world, only trouble awaits us, yet it’s because of the goodness of our God that we can have seasons of joy amid the suffering.

Soul Search

What kind of season am I in?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, whether I am in a joyful season or a difficult season, may I rely fully upon You for wisdom, peace, hope, joy, and in due time, understanding — as I seek You first with a thankful heart for all that You have done and will do in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

9What does the worker gain from his struggles?
ECCLESIASTES 3:9 (CSB)

Commentary

Solomon, looking at life from a human perspective, asks what do we gain from our labor? He asked this before in chapters 1 and 2, previously coming to the conclusion that whatever a person earns in life is their reward, yet there is futility in it all, meaning it’s pointless, because you’re going to die and lose all you gained anyway.

This is a hopeless perspective, yet it is the way of this world: you must hustle and bustle while you can, so that you are in a good position later on. We’ve built an entire life plan upon this way of thinking. We’ve trained ourselves to focus on the future so much, we spend our lives chasing after things so that we can perhaps get ahead of the coming season and have some control over life.

There is some Biblical wisdom in this and we should prepare for the future as necessary. But if Jesus is not your focus and the one Who guides you, life becomes a monotonous flow of change, where eventually you can become traumatized by the roaring and crashing of the waves of life, as you fail to take enough control over it all.

Self-reliance will never match the wonderful and freeing submission of giving it all over to Jesus.

Soul Search

Do I allow myself to get too caught up in how the world approaches life?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, without You there is no hope, perhaps something I remember all too well before coming to You. When I deal with thoughts of hopelessness or worries about the future, thinking I must do this or that, calm my mind and give me Your perfect and always timely guidance. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

10I have seen the task that God has given the children of Adam to keep them occupied.11He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts, but no one can discover the work God has done from beginning to end.
ECCLESIASTES 3:10-11 (CSB)

Commentary

Solomon comes to understand that it’s God who holds all things in His hands. That these seasons of life are not just random events, but the Creator of all things has placed us in the times and places He wants each of us to be.

26From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.27He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
ACTS 17:26-27 (CSB)

Every person has an eternal perspective; many don’t understand why, but they still exhibit it in their desires to obtain or build for the long haul. We often say “this is our forever home” or “we’ll be together forever”. The reality is, our lifespan is but a mere speck when compared to eternity. For the follower of Jesus, we know that there is a true forever, not in this world as we know it now, but in a renewed creation that is to come.

In these seasons of life, the Lord is working, equipping you and encouraging you. Ordering your steps to follow His perfect path for your life. He doesn’t usually tell you beforehand what you will face, and as one man put it: “you are better off not knowing anyway”.

When you build, Jesus is with you; when you tear down, Jesus is with you. When you laugh with joy, Jesus is with you; when you weep with sorrow, Jesus is with you. And we can rejoice in knowing this.

Soul Search

Do I pray for those who just don’t understand, due to their lack of faith in Jesus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I lift up those in my life to You who are lost. Who go through the ups and downs of life with no understanding and no hope. Use me as You see fit to nudge them closer to You. To help them understand that nothing is random and You hold all things in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

12I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and enjoy the good life.13It is also the gift of God whenever anyone eats, drinks, and enjoys all his efforts.
ECCLESIASTES 3:12-13 (CSB)

Commentary

All that is good is from God. Without Him, there would be no good seasons of life — no true enjoyment of anything. Therefore, we should always thank Him for what He blesses us with.

You can take on trials and tribulations of life knowing that the Lord is equipping you to make it through and blesses you with wonderful things that you can enjoy each and every day. Even the smallest of things, like food, water, the joy of accomplishment, are all things to be thankful to Jesus for.

This is a gift of God, that as we work through life, He blesses us with the rewards of our labor. He lets us enjoy things in this life, to lift our spirits, and gives us a taste of what is to come for the believer in Jesus.

Soul Search

Am I approaching each day with a thankful heart toward God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your goodness knows no limits. How wonderful You are and O how I love You, Lord. Thank You for all that You do in my life and all that You bless me with. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

14I know that everything God does will last forever; there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that people will be in awe of him.15Whatever is, has already been, and whatever will be, already is. However, God seeks justice for the persecuted.
ECCLESIASTES 3:14-15 (CSB)

Commentary

God’s Word teaches that there is an eternity for all people, one with Him in eternal joy and one apart from Him in eternal misery. So the seasons of life are arranged so that you and I notice Him, to bring you to a place of being in awe of Him. So that in your most difficult of times you may seek Him for that peace which surpasses all understanding, and in the good times you may praise Him even more and give Him thanks for all that He has done. That each one of us would know our God and Savior, Jesus, personally.

It’s in that right relationship with Jesus that we see the eternal perspective. That indeed all things work for the good of those who love Him and are called by God. Knowing all things, past, present, and future, God works it all out so that justice is truly brought in time as He holds all things in His hands.

We can praise our God every day knowing that as life shifts from one season to another, He is always there and nothing is random, but architected by Him for the very purpose of bringing us closer to Him. And for us who have opened the door to Jesus, that we would realize full closeness with our Savior in eternity, in the renewal of all things. When He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more.

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.2I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.3Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. 4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.
REVELATION 21:1-4 (CSB)

Soul Search

Do I reflect on how God used events in my life to bring me to Him?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You arranged all things in my life so that I would turn to You. Though I had no idea at the time and little desire for You, You didn’t stop pursuing me but made sure I would have every reason to give You my heart. I am ever-so thankful You did. Continue to guide me and use me in meaningful ways until You bring me home to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
