No One Knows The Day or Hour, But Can We Know The Season?

Day 1

36“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows — neither the angels of heaven nor the Son  — except the Father alone.
MATTHEW 24:36 (CSB)

Commentary

This verse comes after Jesus teaches on the time of the Tribulation period, often called the Day of the Lord in Scripture. I believe it also applies to the Rapture of the Church, which Scripture teaches will happen before that day arrives (2 Thess. 2:1-12).

Jesus makes clear that of that time, nobody can know the day or the hour of its arrival, but God the Father alone. This has made for debate in the Church over these last 2,000 years, whether any of us can really know the time at all?

It’s clear that nobody can know the day or hour, however, as we’ll see in this study. Scripture certainly teaches that we should know the season for sure. In fact, Jesus commands us in many places to be ready, to be watching, and not to fall asleep.

Didn’t Jesus call out the Pharisees for not knowing the time of His first coming? In the times we are living in, it’s even more important that we who love Jesus are focused on Him and not falling asleep when the hour appears to be so late.

2He replied, “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be good weather because the sky is red.’3And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.
MATTHEW 16:2-3 (CSB)

Am I watching and discerning the times?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give us wisdom as we dive into this subject that is so hotly debated nowadays. Make clear to us what You want us to understand, the knowledge we need to discern the season, and to use that understanding as fuel to fire our passion for You and reaching the lost with Your hope. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

37As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.38For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.39They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be.
MATTHEW 24:37-39 (CSB)

Commentary

From this passage, it sounds like life will be business as usual for the world until the day of God’s wrath begins (7-Year Tribulation). We read in the book of Revelation that life will be anything but normal during the time of God’s wrath being poured out. This is why I believe Jesus is speaking about the time leading up to that Great Day. That the return we should be looking for is Jesus coming to take His Church.

28It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot: People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building.29But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all.30It will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
LUKE 17:28-30 (CSB)

A key detail of both Noah and Lot’s accounts is that God’s wrath didn’t start until after His righteous were safe on the Ark or led away out of the city. These accounts certainly paint a picture of a rapture-like scenario, a pattern of events that take place at times when God is about to bring complete destruction.

Scripture teaches that there is a gradual build-up to the end, then a suddenness to the arrival of that Great Day. I believe the Rapture is that sudden trigger and the reason why we’re told to be watching for our Lord. We’ll dive further into this next time.

How have I seen this world change just in the last few years?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for not leaving Your children in the dark. You’ve told us so much, and we should all know exactly why we see the events in the world that we currently do. Help me to stay awake and alert at all times, taking great comfort in knowing that You will not abandon us or pour Your wrath down on us. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

34I tell you, on that night two will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left.35Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”
LUKE 17:34-35 (CSB)

Commentary

Jesus goes on to teach that there will be a time when some people are taken and some left. I used to believe that this meant some will be taken to judgment and others left on the earth for reward, pointing to the sheep and goat nations when Jesus returns. However, the more I study it, the more I now believe that this is likely a reference to the Rapture of the Church, given how it’s placed in context, how the timing indicates a world that is business as usual.

31On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back.
LUKE 17:31 (CSB)

In verse 31 (directly above), Jesus is speaking about the Tribulation, specifically the second 3.5 years, when Antichrist has laid siege to Jerusalem. Notice He says “on that day”, at the beginning of the sentence? Yet in verse 34, about the time of those being taken, He starts with “on that night”.

A day in the Jewish calendar is 24-hours of sundown to sundown, as God made night before day, the Jewish day begins with night then day. This has significant, because the Lord may be painting a picture of the Rapture first (night) then God’s Wrath beginning after (day).

This subject is certainly hotly debated. But it seems that the Lord tells us so often to be watching because really we’re not watching for a curse, but rather a blessing in the Lord coming to take us home. Regardless, one thing that is very clear, there will be a time when God’s wrath rains down on a world filled with wicked people. A time I can’t imagine the Church will be here for, if the world is truly that wicked.

Seeing how evil has run wild on earth now, have I considered what this world might look like if all believers were gone?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You make it clear that You are coming for Your Bride, the Church, at some point. Help us to be ready, excited with anticipation, and have a desire to share this wonderful thing with those around us. May we be like the 5 virgins of your parable in Matthew 25, ready with our oil and lamps, eagerly awaiting Your return. In Your mighty name I pray. Amen

Day 4

33“Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming.34“It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert.35Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming — whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning.36Otherwise, when he comes suddenly he might find you sleeping.37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”
MARK 13:33-37 (CSB)

Commentary

Here again, in this parable, Jesus uses specific time of day language, referring to the time span before the daylight hours. It might not mean anything or it could be a reference again to the Rapture before the Wrath. There won’t be Rapture signs in and of themselves that we’re told to look for, but instead signs of a world ripe for God’s judgment.

It’s like this example, which I’ve heard several people say, “As you see Christmas decorations go up in the stores in the United States, you know Thanksgiving is near”. So to apply that, as we see the day of God’s wrath approaching, we know the Rapture is near.

I believe we’re commanded to watch, not for the Second Coming itself, but the start of that time, because ultimately we’re readying ourselves for the Groom to take us, His Bride, home. We’ll be with Jesus at His second coming, so we won’t need to be watching for it.

There will be a time when this world will be judged by God and Jesus says of that time, for all believers on earth to be alert, to be watching, and to be praying that you have the strength to escape all these things that will take place. If you‘re in Christ, then you have the strength; He has made you worthy to escape.

34“Be on your guard, so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life, or that day will come on you unexpectedly35like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth.36But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Am I busy with the work Jesus gave me, or am I just a busybody getting distracted?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, if I am distracted, take those distractions out of my life. Refocus my attention entirely on You and what Your will is for me at this time. May I always be watching and ready for Jesus‘ return. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

1About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you.2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.3When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief.
1 THESSALONIANS 5:1-4 (CSB)

Commentary

Paul wrote in his time that those he was discipling should know and understand these things and not be caught off guard. How much more should you and I know and understand? And we can, we should, and we must. We’re not to be like the Pharisees of Jesus‘ day, who should’ve known the day of His coming and failed to watch.

So, the answer to the question, can we know the season of the Lord’s return — is yes! Jesus is clear on it, and the apostles continued to teach it. We’re to be watching for the signs of the coming day of God’s wrath. Not because we must prepare for that wrath, but because we must prepare ourselves and those around us to go home.

I believe we’re commanded to watch, not only to be prepared, but so that we’ll truly understand and therefore will be watching with eagerness and expectant joy, because it’s what takes place before God’s wrath that we are ultimately looking for, the time when we unite with our Savior forever.

Brothers and sisters, we’re not living in ordinary times; we’re living in Biblical times, and any day our Lord could meet us in the air to take us home with Him. So be watching, sharing the Gospel, and be readying yourself to meet Him. Even so, Lord, come quickly!

12“Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay each person according to his work.13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.14“Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.15Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.16“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to attest these things to you for the churches. I am the Root and descendant of David, the bright morning star.”17Both the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let anyone who hears, say, “Come! ” Let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who desires take the water of life freely.
