We’re Almost Home, But Not Quite Yet

Day 1

1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters,2not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-2 (CSB)

Commentary

Paul had been informed that these believers had been battling false teachers. Deceptive people had come in after Paul to essentially tell them, “Oh, the Lord has already come, you missed Him”. The truth was and is that Jesus has not returned yet. But these deceivers were trying to destroy the faith of these people.

Our time is no different. Many people are saying things like, “Jesus isn’t coming back” or “Oh no, that’s all spiritual, He’s not really coming back in a physical way” or “That already happened in AD 70”.

We can see the same pattern over and over again. Satan is a repeater. He will use the same old tactics if they work, and sadly these tactics still work. Understand that Jesus is coming again, first to take His Church prior to the 7-year Tribulation and then to establish His Kingdom for 1,000 years. In this study, we’ll further explore what God’s Word has to say on this matter, along with the awesome hope and motivation we can take from it.

Am I well-studied in God’s Word on this subject, or do I still have a lot of questions?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You’ve promised that You’re building a place for those who love You and that You’re coming to take us with You. Let me never forget it nor doubt it, even as the enemy attempts to shake my faith in You and Your Word. In Your mighty name, I pray. Amen

Day 2

3Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God’s temple, proclaiming that he himself is God.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:3-4 (CSB)

Commentary

Verse 2 from yesterday contained the term, “The Day of the Lord”. It is a term used in the Bible to refer to the time of the end, being from Rapture to the end of the 1,000-year Kingdom. It’s not necessarily a single day of events but a period of time.

With that in mind, know that all the events associated with the “Day of the Lord”, mainly Christ’s Second Coming, will not take place until some other things happen prior. The first event listed in this passage is the apostasy. The Bible teaches that some will depart from the faith in the last days (1 Timothy 4). There will be people rejecting God’s Word and Jesus, people who once professed to be believers.

However, this verse in 2 Thessalonians is not required for that teaching. I say that because there are some who paint a very compelling argument that the term “apostasy”, in the original Greek, could actually mean departing, as in the Rapture. Either way, Jesus will not come back to this Earth to set up His Kingdom until both the Rapture and this great apostasy have taken place first.

The second event listed in this passage is the unveiling of the final Antichrist. We know from Daniel 9:27 that Antichrist comes on the world scene and confirms a covenant. Then he goes back on that halfway through the 7-year Tribulation. Revelation 13 and 17 tell us more about his rise to power.

As of writing, none of these events have taken place, but we can certainly see our world being set up for such a time. We are not only closer to going home because of time that has passed, but the prophetic implications of so many world events display for us the season we are in. This Antichrist could very well be alive today, a man not yet known to the world.

What technologies have been revealed or events have taken place recently that seem to have moved this world closer to this time of judgment?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You’ve laid out Your overall plan for us, so that we are prepared. If I have any fear or anxiety about these things, please minister to my heart. Help me to gain the knowledge of Your prophetic Word and to use it as another tool in my belt for witnessing to the lost. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 3

6And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time.7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way,8and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:6-8 (CSB)

Commentary

Paul had talked with this group of believers prior. He had told them about these things. So they should’ve understood the sequence of events that will take place.

Paul tells us, by way of the Holy Spirit, that there is a restrainer in place, right now, who is keeping the lawlessness at bay. This doesn’t mean that lawlessness won’t continue to increase, but it will not get to the point where Antichrist is revealed until God wants him to be revealed. Make no mistake, Antichrist will be a judgment from God.

Verse 7 informs us that the restrainer is a “He”. We can understand that this is most likely the Holy Spirit. Even more specifically, the Holy Spirit’s restraining work through all born-again followers of Jesus. We’re the salt and light in this world right now, but once the Lord snatches us away, then the Holy Spirit makes a sort of ninety-degree rotation, if you will, to allow the evil to pass by and the floodgates of lawlessness open. Among this flood of lawlessness, will come the final Antichrist. He will confirm a covenant with many, according to Daniel.

This will begin the 7-year Tribulation period. But know that the main focus of the Tribulation period is on Israel. It’s from Jerusalem and the coming rebuilt temple that Antichrist will rule. And it’s because of the “elect”, the remnant of Jews who God will save, that Jesus destroys Antichrist and the False Prophet at the time that He does.

27He will make a firm covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering. And the abomination of desolation will be on a wing of the temple until the decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.”
DANIEL 9:27 (CSB)
15“So when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place” (let the reader understand),16“then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.17A man on the housetop must not come down to get things out of his house,18and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat.19Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days!20Pray that your escape may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.21For at that time there will be great distress, the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again.22Unless those days were cut short, no one would be saved. But those days will be cut short because of the elect.
MATTHEW 24:15-22 (CSB)

Soul Search

Do I see how this world is more and more resembling the description of the final days?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, use me as You will, to be one who shines Your light brightly into this world. One who stands against the wickedness that surrounds me. May I never attempt to stand against evil in my own power, but fully by the power of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 4

9The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with every kind of miracle, both signs and wonders serving the lie,10and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:9-10 (CSB)

Commentary

Scripture makes it very clear just how deceptive Satan is. The time of the Tribulation will be no different. Many, many millions, likely billions of people will be deceived by him because of their hatred for Jesus.

Notice how Paul clearly differentiates us from them. It’s not born-again believers in Christ now, who will suffer this wrath of God, but those who have rejected Him and are left on this Earth after the Rapture of the Church to face this judgment of God.

9For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 THESSALONIANS 5:9 (CSB)

God is so patient. His mercy is so deep. He will wait and wait and wait on us to come to Him. Even these harsh judgments that God sends on the world during the Tribulation are meant to lead people to repentance. And there will be those, a vast multitude, who will come to faith during that time. It will be the largest awakening in history. They are the saints referred to in Revelation 7:9-17. In addition to them will be the 144,000 Jewish men from the 12 tribes of Israel (Rev. 7:4) and the one-third remnant of Jewish people who end up coming to Jesus during that time.

8In the whole land — this is the LORD’s declaration — two-thirds will be cut off and die, but a third will be left in it.9I will put this third through the fire; I will refine them as silver is refined and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”
ZECHARIAH 13:8-9 (CSB)

Should these events begin in our lifetimes, I believe that we have the assurance of God that those who trust in Jesus now will be removed from this earth before God’s wrath hits. In Luke 21, Jesus tells us to be alert and in prayer that we will have the strength or be counted worthy — as some English translations use — to escape the coming wrath. This worthiness to escape is our faith in Jesus; those who love the Lamb will indeed escape God’s wrath, in the Tribulation and for all eternity.

36But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”
LUKE 21:36 (CSB)

Soul Search

Do I see how much deception is in this world now?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the eyes to see and the ears to hear. Open my mind fully to Your Word and help me to be a guide to those who are suffering deception. May You use me to lead them to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Day 5

11For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie,12so that all will be condemned — those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:11-12 (CSB)

Commentary

Those who continue to reject Jesus during the Tribulation will be given over to a strong delusion and will believe the lie that Antichrist is god.

11and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they did not repent of their works.
REVELATION 16:11 (CSB)

The deceived people will take the Mark of the Beast and will suffer greatly during the Tribulation and for all eternity. They made their choice. God will have given them every opportunity, yet they still will reject Him. At that time, the world will not be full of Christians. The Church will have been snatched away by Jesus. The Tribulation saints will have been martyred when Antichrist takes full power. Only the 144,000 from the 12 tribes of Israel and the Two Witnesses (for a time) will be doing evangelism for Jesus. God will protect the remnant one-third of Jews who will be saved. But it sounds as if the vast majority of people remaining are condemned, like those who died in the Flood.

I like to compare it to Enoch being taken by the Lord and Noah and his family being safely protected through the flood. Enoch being a type of the Church and Noah being a type of the Jewish remanent. Those two groups are saved, the rest of humanity condemned, by their own choice.

There are two takeaways that I want to focus on. The first one being, if you are born-again now, and this happens in your lifetime — which seems more and more likely each passing day — then I fully believe the Bible teaches that you are going to be removed from suffering this time of great wrath from God. As Jesus promised in John 14, He is currently preparing a place for us, to take us there with Him one day, a wedding chamber for His bride.

1“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.2In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?3If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.
JOHN 14:1-3 (CSB)
19Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.20Go, my people, enter your rooms and close your doors behind you. Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.
ISAIAH 26:19-20 (CSB)

The second takeaway is, God is incomprehensibly loving and merciful. This time of wrath will be directed in a way that many will come to faith during, including that promised remnant of God’s ancestrally chosen people, the Jews.

37“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!38See, your house is left to you desolate.39For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”
MATTHEW 23:37-39 (CSB)
This event serves as yet another example of God’s promise-keeping. There’s no “maybe” with Jesus’ promises, only a hope of the things to come.

Saints, we’re almost home, and this should bring us great joy and motivate us to be sharing the Gospel with everyone that we can, Jews and Gentiles alike.

8There is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved his appearing.
2 TIMOTHY 4:8 (CSB)

Soul Search

Am I more hopeful and motivated to share Jesus, knowing the future plans that God has?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, let my heart not be closed, but open with a love for those around me. Fill me with the joy of Your promises, so much so that I cannot even fathom the thought of my currently unsaved neighbors, coworkers, friends, or family members not being in Heaven with us. Give me the love and courage to tell them about Jesus in any way that I can. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
